From Toll Collector to Passport Issuer.
Intermediaries will not disappear. Their job changes from standing in the middle of every transaction to attesting once.
The Creator's Journey · Chapter XIV, When Agents Act
Does trust that can be proven mean the end of banks, brokers and platforms? No. Someone still has to vouch for the facts a proof is built on. Before a facet can prove you are an accredited investor, a trusted party has to check that you are and attest to it. Before an identity can stand behind an agent, someone has to verify that the person is real.
Society will always need trusted parties to provide identity and to attest to attributes. Banks, brokers and other institutions are natural candidates for that role. What changes is the shape of the job.
The Medici wrote trust on paper
One of the Medici bank’s most important tools was the bill of exchange. A merchant in one city could deposit money with a Medici branch and receive a piece of paper. He could carry it across Europe, to Bruges or London, and turn it back into money at another branch. It worked for one reason. People trusted the name behind it.
That was trust on paper, backed by a family. It worked only as far as the name reached, and only as long as the family stayed honest and solvent. Centuries later, J.P. Morgan told a congressional committee that the first thing in credit is character, before money or anything else.
The trust does not depend on any one founder, bank or platform staying in the room.
Because a man I do not trust could not get money from me on all the bonds in Christendom.
We write it in proof
A facet is a kind of bill of exchange for identity. A payment proof is a kind of bill of exchange for value. Instead of resting on a family name, they rest on mathematics that anyone can verify. The issuer attests once. The proof travels on its own.
The standards for this role are already written. In May 2025, the World Wide Web Consortium published Verifiable Credentials 2.0 as a formal Recommendation. Its model has three parties: an issuer that attests, a holder that carries the credential and a verifier that checks it. It defines a verifiable credential as one “whose authorship can be cryptographically verified.” That is the passport issuer’s job, written as a web standard.
This changes how much rent an intermediary can extract from the system. Much less. It is a very good time to be an institution that understands its future job is attestation, not toll collection.
Choose your future job
- List what you vouch forIdentity, payment, ownership, reputation. Write every fact your business checks for others.
- Separate the check from the tollFor each one, note whether you earn by checking once or by standing in the middle every time.
- Ask what the check is worth alonePrice the attestation as if the proof travels without you.
- Make the check rigorousA proof is only as good as the facts behind it. Be the issuer others build on.
Quick answers
Will banks disappear in agentic commerce?
Rob Frasca’s view is no. Someone still has to verify identity and attest to facts. The role shifts from collecting a toll on every transaction to issuing an attestation once, and the proof travels on its own.
What is attestation in digital identity?
A trusted party checks a fact once, such as identity or investor status, and signs a credential that can be verified later without contacting the issuer. The W3C Verifiable Credentials standard calls the three parties issuer, holder and verifier.
